TOM DISCOVERS BASEBALL TRANSLATION

“Take me out to the ballgame…” Tom opened up his eyes surprisedly. The radio alarm turned on and played an unknown song. Where was he? He looked around the room, and the memory came back. Yesterday he flew from Austria to JFK airport to visit his aunt and her family for an American vacation.

Tom was now wide awake; it was his first time visiting his aunt in America! He got up and walked to the window where he had a gorgeous view of a big park where there were amazingly tons of people out and about. It was unbelievable that so much was going on outside at eight o’clock in the morning. Tom got ready and went downstairs. He could hear some friendly voices, and it smelled like food. At that moment, he realized how hungry he was.

He went into the kitchen, said good morning to his cousins Ben and Sophie, and they immediately began bombarding him with questions, “How did you sleep? How was the flight?” Aunt Elly and Uncle Matty settled the kids down and told them that they needed to give Tom some time since he was surely still tired from the trip. Tom was still a bit overwhelmed from the traveling, especially since he came alone. His parents were not coming for another two weeks, and they would take a family vacation together. Tom sat down at the table, and his aunt asked him what he would like to have for breakfast. His uncle was standing by the stove and making pancakes. Tom always wanted to try them, so he ordered a traditional American breakfast: pancakes with maple syrup! The kids were so excited because it was the first time that their cousin from Austria had visited. They had already been to Vienna, but Tom had never been in New Jersey.

“You chose the best day ever to come and visit us,” Sophie said excitedly to him as she was clapping her hands.

“Why?” Tom asked.

“Because today is a very special day here in America!”

“Yeaaaaa, today is the fourth of July!” Ben interrupted.

“OK, and what is on the fourth of July?”

“It’s definitely a day like no other, I can promise you that, Tom!” Ben smiled. “That’s what I figured, but what exactly happens on the fourth of July here in America?” “It’s our national holiday, it’s Independence Day!” Sophie said proudly.

“Aaaah, is that why there are so many people out and about?”

“Yes, of course, and I can guarantee that you will have the time of your life, we have so much planned for you,” Uncle Matty winked from the kitchen.

Tom started to get excited. Aunt Elly brought over the finished pancakes, and the kids started to eat. By the end of breakfast, Tom knew quite a bit more about the national holiday, mainly that July 4th, 1776 was the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed. Americans call their national holiday, “Independence Day” or simply the “4th of July”. “But who was America independent from?”

The first thirteen states had been British colonies up until that point. They were under the control of the British crown, had to pay British taxes and were considered British citizens. However the settlers did not want that anymore. In fact, they left Europe in order to make decisions for themselves and to live as free citizens in a free country, and that is why they

fought against the English until they ultimately gained their independence. It was amazing that Tom had learned so much about America after only being there for a few hours!
